IMPORTANCE OF SELF STUDY IN JEE & NEET PREPARATION

IMPORTANCE OF SELF STUDY IN JEE & NEET PREPARATION

For many of the students preparing for various entrance examinations like JEE, NEET, BITSAT, NDA, etc. it is very important to understand the importance of self-study and focus on it to excel in the respective examination. Here in this discussion, we will try to discuss many aspects of self-study which will clarify all doubts in student's minds and will help them to organize their self-study.

Difference between study techniques till 10th & after 10th

Till the 10th standard, all the regular students are doing well as study techniques and exam patterns are purely memory-based. General procedure students follow is read theory, then solve unsolved questions directly and go for unsolved questions. This strategy works for students till the 10th standard as most of the questions are direct formula based or memory-based. This difference is not understood and considered by many of the students and it finally results in drastic fall down in their scores from 10th to 12th. As this method doesn’t work post 10th and specifically in entrance preparation where questions are not based on memory or direct formulae.

Then Which technique exactly should be followed by Student after 10th?
Here the procedure for preparation can be explained in following simple steps that students must follow.
1) A student must understand that he/she needs to study daily to achieve the desired result in entrance exams right from the first day of the academic year.
2) Whether you are preparing based on school learning or have joined some professional coaching Centre it’s important to keep your monthly, weekly & daily targets. It can be done easily if your coaching center is examining every weekend.
3) Once the unit is taught in school or coaching make sure you read the respective unit from your NCERT textbook.
4) After theory reading don’t try to solve solved problems directly on the same day. First, you read all the solved problems thoroughly and then try to solve one by one by taking reference to steps followed up. (Use at least 25-30 solved question for unit)
5) The next day try to solve same problems without taking reference. This will give you an idea about what are the concepts you understood and which you didn’t.
6) Once this is done try to select a few unsolved problems and solve them. At least try to solve 25 unsolved problems per unit in the first go, you will see as compare to previous seating’s efficiency of solving unsolved problems has increased. Don’t forget to clear your doubts with the help of your teachers the very next day.
7) This technique should be followed parallelly as the syllabus progresses or immediately once they finish a specific unit.

Revisions are more important
Remember you are preparing for two long years and finally will be attending the exam with all concepts stored in your memory with great remaining power. In order to do so periodic revision of what you study is very important. I usually advise my students to go with a 75-25 ratio, i.e. 75% of your time you can spend on currently learning syllabus and 25% every day, every week and every month for revisions.

What to do during this revision
Every student must make a small notebook per subject. Make a very short note of theory, formulae, and key or different steps involved in solved problems in that notebook. Also, keep 1-2 pages reserved for writing mistakes you will be committing in various tests at your coaching and school. These 4-5 pages per unit will be your most important material throughout preparation.
At the time of revision, you must read these notes and must solve at least 5-10 problems. Here again, this is very important as many students do the mistake of only revising theory at the time of revision and hence can’t do justice to their tests.

Finally taking all tests with a sincere attitude will be the key to understand how much perfection you have in your preparation. Comment and suggest to us below so that we can come out with a complete blog on how to attempt tests and do analysis after every test.
